Visa to Laos

Updated on Thursday, October 2, 2025

Obtaining a visa for Laos is straightforward, with options designed for convenience. Depending on your nationality, you can enter Laos through Visa Exemption, the readily available Visa on Arrival (VOA) at major entry points, or by applying online for an E-Visa. This guide breaks down the requirements, fees, and validity periods for each method, ensuring you are fully prepared for a smooth and hassle-free entry into Laos.

1. Visa Exemption

Citizens of several countries, particularly those within the ASEAN bloc, are granted visa-free entry, typically for 30 days.

  • Example: Vietnamese citizens receive a 30-day visa exemption.

2. Visa on Arrival (VOA)

For most international visitors, the Visa on Arrival (VOA) is the most common and easiest option. You can obtain a VOA at major international checkpoints:

Common VOA Entry Points:

  • International Airports: Wattay (Vientiane), Luang Prabang, and Pakse.
  • Major Land Crossings: Thai-Lao Friendship Bridges and key border crossings with Vietnam and Cambodia.

Basic VOA Requirements:

Requirement Details
Passport Must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
Photos 1–2 passport-sized photos (4x6 cm).
Visa Fee Approximately $30 to $40 USD (varies by nationality/entry point).
Duration VOA tourist visas are typically valid for 30 days.

Tip: Carry US Dollars in cash for the visa fee, as other currencies may not be accepted or the exchange rate may be unfavorable.

3. E-Visa (Electronic Visa)

Laos operates an E-Visa system, allowing travelers to apply and receive their visa online before departure. This can save time at the border.

E-Visa Details:

  • Application: Submit via the official Laos E-Visa Portal.
  • Processing Time: Usually around 3 business days.
  • Duration: Typically valid for 30 days from the intended date of entry.
  • Entry Points: The E-Visa is only accepted at selected, designated checkpoints (usually the major international airports and key land borders).

Advice: Print a copy of your approved E-Visa confirmation and present it along with your passport upon arrival.

4. General Entry Rules

  • Immigration Form: You will need to complete an immigration form, usually distributed on the plane or provided at the border.
  • Visa Extension: If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for an extension at the Immigration Department in Vientiane or other major cities before your current visa expires.
